Highly variable in appearance. Most commonly seen with alternating bands of black or brown and white or light yellow, including the underside, where the light bands become wider. Generally between 2.5 – 3.5 feet in length (rarely over 4’)

The California Kingsnake is confined to California but there are seven subspecies of Kingsnake found throughout North America. They are found in forests, grasslands, deserts, and urban areas.
They have excellent vision, like most species of snakes. Hearing is extremely restricted to the sensing of vibrations. They play an important role in controlling populations of venomous snakes, which can pose a threat to humans.
