Osiris – male; born 1996; was donated to the zoo in 2007 when his owner could no longer care for him.
Big, isn’t he?
In fact, he got too big for the people who wanted to keep him as a pet. He is now over 8 feet long and could reach 9 to 12 feet; he also weighs around 40 pounds. Snakes have no ears but pick up vibrations to let them know when prey is around. They get most of their sensory information from their tongues which they flick in and out to check for smells and warn us of danger. Boas strangle their prey and then swallow it whole. They can go for long periods without eating and will hibernate if it is very cold. In the wild they eat, mice, rats, small rabbits. The larger snakes can even eat a whole chicken. Osiris now typically eats rats.
Boa’s lifespan ranges from 25 to 30 years.
